Replaced or Re-placed!
When I first became a true follower of Jesus I was in a church on the OSU campus. I was encouraged to serve, which I was happy to do because I was so excited about my new life in Christ! We were a mobile church, which meant we had to set up everything each week. Someone mentioned that I could handle tech things pretty well so I was recruited to set up the projector and computer to shine on the large movie screen. Easy. No problem.
If only that was my whole task. I was also supposed to run the slides during worship and the sermon. However, the projector was right by where people entered. Listen, if you have ever met me, you know that where there are people that is where I want to be. So I quickly distracted myself with talking to people and saying hello, which is great, but who was at the computer advancing the slides?! No one could follow along with the song because someone (me!) was not doing their job. That is when I found out that you can actually be fired from a volunteer position!
To be fair, it was more like I was reassigned. They wisely suggested that I might be a better fit as a greeter. Boy, were they right! I was one of the best greeters that church has ever seen!
Thankfully, God has designed us differently so that we can compliment each other. He has wired us and gifted us differently and joined us together. In fact, he calls us the body of Christ, building each other up and caring for one another. We need each other and we all are needed to function properly!
In Ephesians 4:15-16, the Apostle Paul writes “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
Let’s be that functioning, building, growing body! I have been so blessed to be able to explore many roles in the church. It has shown me many things about myself (like I have no attention for advancing slides) and it has allowed me to be blessed by blessing others. I want that for you! I want you to be connected and cared for as we care for each other and all the people we get to impact.
