Have You Asked Someone Lately?

Posted by Brett Starr

So, what are your thoughts on God these days? Now, when you just read that question, you either heard it as being asked to you OR you read it as the answer to the title of the post.

Either way, it is a great conversation and thought starter for anyone.

Maybe you need to be asked what your thoughts on God these days are because it might lead you to further your journey knowing and understanding him. Maybe your time spent in prayer and in the Word and listening for the prompting of the Holy Spirit in your life has faded a bit. Maybe your thoughts on God these days aren't fresh and new, but you have just 'got by' with what you think you know about Him already.

On the other hand, maybe you have been wondering how to start a spiritual conversation with someone be it a co-worker, a family member, a fellow classmate or someone else. Most of us can admit it is difficult to know how to begin a spiritual conversation with someone without it seeming awkward or like you are in their face about it.

I regularly encourage the students in our student ministry to begin a spiritual conversation by simply asking someone, "So what did you do this weekend?" with the hopes that the person will reply and share what their weekend entailed. And as that person shares what they did, I encourage them to listen and admire what they shared with them. Basically, that means engaging them in conversation about those things they did without always thinking about what you are going to say next but really showing interest. The next step would be to share what you did over the weekend and admit that, amongst all the other things, you attended church or a youth group activity. This might lend itself to then asking another question of "So, what are your thoughts on God these days?" or "Are you a churchgoer?" and see where the conversation goes.

One of Jesus' main methods of conversing with people that led to deeper things was asking good questions and listening to them to engage with and hear their thoughts and then sharing his own.

As Jesus' followers, we all need to learn how to better converse with people about God in order to be his ambassadors in all the different places He has put each and every one of us. He wants His message of the gospel to reach everyone everywhere.

"The Lord is...is patient toward you (and others), not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." 2 Peter 3:9

"...we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making his plea through us..." 2 Corinthians 5:20a
