Easter Numbers Don’t Matter…Unless They Do
Easter Numbers Don’t Matter…Unless They Do
God gave us such an amazing Easter weekend a couple of weekends ago! We saw more people at our campuses than we have any other Sunday in the last 5+ years. Many of us brought neighbors, co-workers, and friends with us. It was a BIG day!
But…does that even matter?
I mean, does it matter that we had a lot of people in attendance? After all, our goal isn’t to build a big mega-church, is it?
Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. (Mark 4:26-27 ESV)
The seed grows, but he knows not how. It’s a miracle that only God can accomplish. That’s true of physical seed, but Jesus is talking about the kingdom of God. It’s true of spiritual seed as well.
The seed is the gospel message we’ve been entrusted with. We don’t know how it takes root in the hearts of people. In other words, we don’t know who will receive it and be changed forever or who will walk away, still headed for destruction.
All we know is that we’ve been given the seed to scatter, and God makes it grow.
Read that again and take a second to ponder it. If it’s true, then all we can do is scatter as much seed as possible, right? In as many hearts as possible. As many times as possible. And leave the rest up to God.
It reminds me of Dory in Finding Nemo singing, “just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”
You’ve been given the seed of the gospel. Entrusted with the “message of reconciliation,” 2 Corinthians 5 says. Just keep scattering the seed. “Just keep scattering, just keep scattering…”
So does it even matter that we had a ton of people at New Life on Easter??
Not even a little bit.
Unless.
We were scattering the seed of the gospel.
Then yeah…it would matter eternally, wouldn’t it?
Let’s be a church that keeps scattering – rain or shine, Easter Sunday or this Sunday.
