Do the Right Thing

Posted by Bill Robbins

“There is a way that seems right to a man”

I think it is safe to say that you believe in “doing the right thing.” The fact you are on this site and are reading past the title probably reflects your desire to act in a moral fashion. I know in my life I have always valued this but many times my behavior did not reflect my inner belief. I have tried to be a good husband, father and grandfather but often came up short in all these areas There are two factors that come to mind that prevent me from “doing the right thing” more frequently in all situations.

Failing to Be Intentional

Proverbs 16:2 , Proverbs 19:22

When Claire and I married, we both thought, “Our marriage will be different.” We were in love and thought that life together was going to be one great experience. We were rebels without a clue. We both believed our marriage was going to be an extension of our dating days. We had no idea of what it took to be a good husband or wife. We were controlled by our preconceived opinions and our emotions. We both wanted a good marriage, but had no idea or plan for working towards it. It was 14 years into our marriage when God gave us a plan and we began intentionally living our lives with that plan being central.

Reacting instead of Responding

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death." - Proverbs 14:12

“Follow your heart” and “Trust your gut” are two popular philosophies for living your life. The Bible does not advise us to follow any body part, not even the brain. We are to look to God’s word as the authority in life directions and decisions. When I trust my instincts I am usually making decisions that appeal to me. This is a form of selfishness and Idolatry, since I’m placing my desires above the wisdom of God.

Drifting and reacting are formulas for frustration for those wanting to live a life that reflects and honors Christ. The formula for success is found in Proverbs 3:5-6:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

God gave me this passage as a life verse long before I understood the richness of its wisdom. May He direct your steps today.
